Low Milk Supply: Why It Happens and the Herbs That Actually Help You Breastfeed Longer

Low milk supply is one of the top reasons women stop breastfeeding before they want to. But in most cases, it’s fixable — especially when you understand what’s causing it and use the right herbal support.

Why Does Milk Supply Drop?

Breast milk operates on a simple supply-and-demand system: the more milk is removed from the breast (through nursing or pumping), the more the body produces. Supply drops when demand signals decrease — missed nursing sessions, poor latch, supplementing with formula, or returning to work and pumping less frequently than needed.

Hormones also play a role. Prolactin — the milk-making hormone — can dip with stress, poor sleep, or significant postpartum hormonal shifts. Dehydration and insufficient caloric intake (breastfeeding requires 400–500 extra calories per day) further reduce supply.

What Are Galactagogues?

Galactagogues are substances that support or increase breast milk production. They work primarily by mimicking or stimulating prolactin. The most effective herbal galactagogues:

  • Fenugreek — The most studied. Increases prolactin via phytoestrogenic effects. Most women notice results within 24–72 hours.
  • Moringa — Nutrient-dense and increasingly supported by clinical evidence for milk volume. Also supports postpartum energy and recovery.
  • Lemongrass — Traditional galactagogue used widely across Asia and the Middle East.
  • Fennel — Estrogenic compounds stimulate prolactin. A classic lactation herb.
